De Morgan used his mathematical skill to plan designs for single tiles that could be repeated horizontally, vertically, or rotated to create a range of patterns when installed. The patterns are particularly triumphant between 1889-1898 when he produced large scale architectural work with his new business partner, Halsey Ricardo (1854 – 1928), a newly formed partnership in 1888, sponsored by the two men's wives, Sophia De Morgan and Kate (Rendell) Ricardo.
The 9-inch tile depicts a primrose with three yellow flowers and symmetrical leaves in a blue and manganese floral cartouche. This tile was originally designed for use on the P&O ship S.S. Arabia.
