Howard Hodgkin produced Indian Leaves it in 1982, when he approved the Bon à Tirer for the catalogue being made to coincide with his exhibition Indian Leaves at Tate, London, UK in the same year. It was decided that the print wouldn't be used for the deluxe version of the catalogue so remained unpublished. 42 years later the Howard Hodgkin Estate have stamped, numbered and dated them, releasing them to select cultural organisations including Glyndebourne.
Hodgkin was the first contemporary artist to be commissioned to produce our Festival Programme Book cover in 1998 who was not designing for the stage. His design cover has become a timeless and iconic example of what we strive to achieve through commissioning artists for the front cover and is well loved by our audiences.
Howard Hodgkin (1932–2017) was born in London, UK. He exhibited internationally at Whitechapel Gallery, London, UK; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, US; Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, Texas, US; Kunstverein für die Rheinlande und Westfalen, Düsseldorf, DE; Hayward Gallery, London, UK, Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin, IE; Tate Britain, London, UK; Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid, ES and The Hepworth, Wakefield UK.
Sales of the print will help fund the Trust’s ambition to preserve and promote Howard’s legacy, as well as support Glyndebourne's visual arts programme.
