Morag Caister’s poster is a response to a part in the story of Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde when Isolde experiences a hallucination of Tristan, alive again after his tragic death. Aiming to capture the iridescent moment through Isolde’s eyes, Caister portrays him as a half rainbow-like, half ghostly figure who is seemingly relaxed and comfortable, but hardly apparent and empty, as if a shell of his former self. Speaking of the opera, Caister says ‘I couldn't imagine anything more bittersweet; it was as if the music was slicing me all over like tiny razor-sharp violin bows, and I wanted to create that feeling visually to describe the really awful mixture of pain and pleasure involved in maintaining an illusion.’
Morag Caister (b. 1994) lives and works between London, UK and Tirana, AL. Caister was awarded the Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year, 2022 and emerged as a candidate for Forbes 30 Under 30 Europe: Art & Culture.
